Optically isotropic interference films of uniform thicknesses were formed on the flat surface of oriented, single-crystalline thorium dioxide by reaction with anhydrous gaseous hydrogen fluoride. The films were studied by immersion spectrophotometry, from which the optical constants were determined as a function of wavelength, order of interference, angle of incidence and plane of polarization.
