&NA;In summary, the earlier diagnosis and new methods of therapeutic management that will be necessary to improve the present results of treating adenocarcinoma of the colorectum may be achieved by some of the approaches that have been reviewed. Clearly, earlier diagnosis will result in better rates of survival. This includes general tests such as those for carcinoembryonic antigen, extension of the field for endoscopic examination and biopsy, and the use of biochemical and immunologic maneuvers to detect prodromes of epithelium at greater risk. Also promising is combining resection more expeditiously with irradiation therapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy alone or in combination. Finally, the newer metabolic approach to epidemiology suggests that etiology of this neoplasm rests primarily in the environment, and the identification of agents responsible is a rational goal.
