A discussion of the practice of medicine today and tomorrow is necessarily rooted in the past; it may therefore be helpful first to have a look at “yesterday.” Furthermore, since those of us who are authors of the three sections in Chapter 2 were charged to present our individual views, I shall use some autobiographical material to orient the reader as to the background of my viewpoint.
