Until recently the concept that ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter's syndrome, and other“rheumatoid variants”might share a common etiology was based on their sharing inflammation sites and seronegativity for rheumatoid factor and, often, their occurrence in the same patients. Their sharing of strong positivity for W27 now adds support to the concept; the mechanism may be a postinfective, chronic autoimmune response.
