A copper wire atomizer was used to determine mercury by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Sampling was accomplished by either pipetting a few microliters on to the wire or by submerging the wire in the sample solution. In both cases, the mercury is reduced at the copper surface and forms an amalgam. If the sample was made acidic most interferences were avoided.
