196 JOURNAL OF ANALYTICAL ATOMIC SPECTROMETRY APRIL 1991 VOL. 6 Conferences and Meetings Fourth Surrey Conference on Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry and King- ston Conference on Plasma Spectro- metry in the Earth Sciences July 14-1 8 1991 University of Surrey Guilford UK The Surrey Conference is the fourth bi- ennial meeting to be held at the Surrey University site. Papers are invited on all aspects of plasma source mass spectro- metry. Following the success of the 1989 meetings the 1991 Surrey Conference will be followed by a second meeting (previously held at Kingston Polytech- nic) dedicated to Earth Science applica- tions of plasma spectrometry. The scientific programmes will consist of invited and open lectures discussion sessions and poster events. There will also be full social programmes.Further details can be obtained from the conference organizers Drs. Kym E. Jarvis and John G. Williams NERC ICP- MS Facility Department of Geology RHBNC Egham Surrey TW20 OEX UK or Dr. Ian Jarvis School of Geologi- cal Sciences Kingston Polytechnic Penrhyn Road Kingston on Thames Surrey KTl 2EE UK. Fifth Italo-Hungarian Symposium on Spectrochemistry Quality Control and Assurance in the Life Sciences September 9- 1 3 199 1 Pisa Italy The fifth in this series of meetings will be held at the Conference Centre Via Matteotti 1 Pisa Italy. As previously the meeting will be devoted to all aspects of spectrochemistry with partic- ular emphasis on quality control and assurance of analytical measurements currently of primary importance for guaranteeing the reliability of all experi- mental studies. Thus topics such as the proper planning of investigations the adoption of good laboratory practice principles the preparation of new refe- rence materials and their correct use and the sound assessment of references values for elements and organic sub- stances in various matrices will be taken into account thoroughly exploring the role played by spectrochemical tech- niques in their implementation. Approximately 30 keynote lectures will form the backbone of the confer- ence. In turn the lectures will be divided into seven subsequent oral sessions high- lighting how the concepts of quality control and assurance can strengthen the reliability of scientific information gener- ated through the most advanced instru- mental methods as applied to real-world problems.Among others the progress made thus far in the field of chemical speciation are envisaged as one of the major issues. Furthermore achievements in flow injection systems on-line pre- concentration procedures and direct assay of solid samples will be given special attention in view of their analyti- cal potential. Finally in consideration of the higher capabilities possessed by com- bined techniques in these research areas and given the relevant role played by separation methods when interfaced with spectrometric detectors and entire session will be dedicated to the various branches of chromatography. A perma- nent session of posters has also been planned to accompany the meeting throughout the entire duration to offer a more detailed and complete presentation of specific studies (round-tables for pres- entation and discussion are also fore- seen). The tentative titles of the seven oral sessions are as follows Implementation of Quality Control and Assurance Schemes; Advances in Chromatography; Recent Developments in Hyphenated Techniques; Progress in Speciation Studies; Applications in Environmental Sciences; Applications in Biomedical Sciences; and Applications in Occupa- tional Hygiene. Prominent representatives of the major scientific institutions from both Italy and Hungary will offer a thorough and updated view of current activities within the scope of the conference. A number of renowned scientists from other countries will also participate in the Symposium to expand the horizon of experiences avail- able and evaluate the extent of interna- tional agreement on the above-mentioned issues.Guests who have accepted invita- tions to date are the following B. Grie- pink Community Bureau of Reference Commsion of the European Communi- ties Brussels (identification of analytical errors); P. R. Griffiths University of Idaho ID Moscow USA (hyphenation of chromatography and FT-IR spectro- metry); K. Grob Kantonales Labor Zurich Switzerland (automated methods in GC); R. L. Watters Jr. National Insti- tute of Standards and Technology Gai- thersburg MD USA (standard reference materials in spectroanalysis); and W. Wegscheider Tec hnische Universitat Graz Austria (automated methods in The Third Announcement will be available in June 199 1.Stands will be available for manufac- turers of spectroscopic instrumentation and chemical products relevant to the subject of the Symposium. The fee re- quested for a booth of 9 m? is US $2300. Participants will be welcomed by the Mayor of Pisa in the City Hall on ICP-AES). Monday September 9 1991. A guided tour of Pisa and its outskirts will be orga- nized on Wednesday September 1 1 while the closing dinner will take place on Thursday 12. Those who intend to participate in the Symposium are kindly requested to com- plete application forms and return them to the Segreteria per le AttivitB Culturali (Istituto Superiore di SanitB) no later than June 15 1991. Submission of ab- stracts for the poster session should be made within the same deadline. All cor- respondence dealing with the scientific programme should be addressed directly to S.Caroli Laboratorio di Tossicologia Applicata Istituto Superiore di Sanith Viale Regina Elena 299 00 16 1 -Rome Italy. The preferred conference language will be English. However contributions can be presented in German or French if desired. The registration fee of Lit. 200,000 (Lit 300,000 after the deadline) is to be paid before June 15 1991. The fee entitles participants to attend scientific sessions and social events (closing dinner included) and to receive one copy of the special volume collecting the com- plete texts of all contributions presented at the Symposium. Federation of Analytical Chemistry and Spectroscopy Societies (FACSS)- Pacific Conference Joint Meeting October ti-1 1 199 1 Anaheim CA USA The 1991 FACSS meeting is a combined meeting with the Pacific Conference on Chemistry and Spectroscopy. The joint meeting will provide a programme of ex- panded technical coverage with an em- phasis on emerging technologies in analytical spectroscopic chemical and biochemical science. In addition the Tomas Hirschfeld Student Awards will be presented at the meeting to the gradu- ate students submitting the most out- standing papers. The scientific programme will also include various Award Symposia. There will also be an Instrument Exhibition and Workshops and Short Courses on topics such as ICP- MS GC-MS LC-MS sample prepara- tion lasers in analytical chemistry and chemometncs. The Employment Bureau will be operated by the national office of the American Chemical Society. For general information contact one of the General Chairman Richard Deming Department of Chemistry and Biochem- istry California State University at Ful- lerton Fullerton CA 92634 USA (714 773 2 170); or Connie Sobel 1800 N. Laboratory Exhibition and Conference November 5-7 199 1 London The 1991 event will be known as the Laboratory Exhibition and Conference and will be held at the New Earls Court 2 Exhibition Centre. The timing of the event has also been changed to November. Not only will the new event bring together the world’s leading scientific companies it will also introduce further conferences in addition to the existing Analyticon confer- ence alongside the exhibition.Discus- sions with potential conference sponsors are at an advanced stage; the likely outcome includes a conference in con- junction with The Chromatography Society a Clinical Biochemistry meeting in conjunction with the Southern Region of the Association of Clinical Biochem- ists and a conference organized by The Royal Society of Chemistry. The move to the new venue of Earls Court 2 has enabled the organizers to structure the exhibition into clearly defined technology zones Analytical Science Biotechnology Laboratory Automation Environmental Analysis Laboratory Fittings Laboratory Ware and Medical Laboratory Sciences.Further information is available from Evan Steadman Communications Group The Hub Emson Close Saffron Walden Essex CH 10 1 HL UK. 1992 Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry January 6-11 1992 San Diego CA USA The 1992 Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry will be held Monday January 6 through Saturday January 11 1992 in Southern California.
