Geographic analysis of cancer mortality data in the U.S. reveals a surprising variety of patterns. Among them a southern coastal clustering of high lung cancer rates in white males, high oral cancer rates in rural southern females, a pronounced excess of bladder cancer deaths among whites in certain areas. Field studies reveal sometimes surprising etiologic correlations.
