The implications of recent experimental findings on correlations in rapidity among produced particles are assessed. Present evidence indicates that on the central plateau a short‐range correlation picture is strongly favored over a fragmentation scheme. In search of shortcomings of a naive description of short‐range correlations we push the Mueller‐Regge formalism beyond reasonable bounds of credibility, but on the central plateau no inconsistencies are found.
