When the staff nurses of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit questioned the financial, family, and staff utilization problems created by chronic patients in the critical care unit, they worked together on a solution. DCCN gives them special recognition for critical care excellence in dealing with this problem through education of the parents to prepare them for home care of their critically ill child.
