Vastly improved knowledge of the role of IgE in mediating immediate hypersensitivity reactions has provided a scientific underpinning for traditional approaches to allergies like ragweed hay fever and helped explain the effectiveness of long-utilized drugs. It has already led to improvements in diagnostic techniques and is opening the way to the development of better and more specific therapy.
