Often subtle, perhaps manifested only by a“failure to thrive,”infantile hypercalcemia may well prove to be a significant cause of mental retardation and cardiovascular anomalies. The author discusses steps that may permit early detection of the disease, as well as a public health program that could prevent the development of hypercalcemia in the unborn infant.
