Cardiovascular reactivity (CR), the abrupt increase in blood pressure and heart rate that occurs during stress, is emerging as a potential risk factor for hypertension and coronary heart disease, This article reviews the research on CR to verbal communication, an everyday stressor. A case study is presented to illustrate the usefulness of this research to clinical practice. Strategies to decrease CR during talking are presented.
