AbstractProceeding from Lancaster's definition of interactions between random variables, the authors set up a model for contingency tables of any dimension. Three‐dimensional contingency tables are used as an example to discuss first and second order interaction effects, and the conventional independence are expressed by hypotheses concerning interaction effects.
