The problem was to narrow the gap between the training provided during residency and the requirements of the practicing pediatrician; the first step came in response to needs obvious in the community surrounding the university hospital. In a few short years the Maryland residency has come to offer training in some 85% of the experiences a pediatrician is likely to encounter after residency—including those of private practice.
