Venous thrombosis of the legs can mimic a number of other conditions and vice versa. To help the physician in differentiation, such simple techniques as ultrasonography, plethysmography, and“split-product”serology have been devised to supplement or replace x-ray phlebography, which is often more difficult. The authors describe these and explain why surgical treatment is rarely required in this condition.
