This review describes the conceptual basis for local anesthesia with sedation, known as monitored anesthesia care, as well as its role as an alternative technique to general and regional anesthesia. In addition, the specific role of sedative-hypnotic, amnestic, analgesic drugs and their combinations will be discussed.
