The ability of digitalis to potentiate cardiac contraction is intimately related to its interference with the active transport mechanism involved in the translocation of sodium and potassium across the cell membrane. This is also the mechanism that explains the toxicity problems so often encountered with use of the cardiac glycosides—myocardial irritability and heart block.
