A linear theory of thermoelasticity for nonsimple materials is derived by using an entropy production inequality proposed by Green and Laws. A uniqueness theorem, complete solutions of the field equations, a study of the plane waves and fundamental solutions for steady vibrations are presented. A method to reduce the thermoelastostatic plane strain problem to an isothermal one is established. The thermal stress problem for an elastic space with a spherical cavity is also considered.
