Rehabilitation of patients with long‐term illnesses of ten includes recommendations for modification or change of behavior. Force field analysis is a method of promoting behavioral change that is systematic, patient‐centered, and comprehensive. The process of change includes unfreezing behavioral movement and refreezing behavior at the new level. A patient situation is described in which the behavior to be changed was smoking. Force field analysis is particularly helpful as a way of giving hope and assisting patients whose past efforts to change were unsuccessful.
