AbstractAssorted procedures for solutions of geometric and gravimetric problems on a sphere are reviewed. These and similar procedures allow the use of a sphere as a simple model for the Earth.Specific topics elaborated are:Compartments—size and shape, area and centre of gravity.Distances—angular and spatial, total number of distinct distances.Attraction and potential—formulas for compartments and mass-lines, rigorous and approximate solutions for caps.
