Although the ampere balance is today the primary standardizing device for the measurement of electric current, such balances are not available in the laboratory supply houses. Elaborately designed ampere balances have been made in physics departments with large resources, but the models we have seen elsewhere are satisfactory for demonstration purposes only. This paper describes the construction of a simple balance well suited for quantitative laboratory work as well as classroom demonstration.
