While vascular damage can be correlated with the degree of hypertension, there are enough exceptions to have led to a search for other factors. This search has resulted in the implication of renin-angiotensin hyperactivity and of excessive sodium-balance oscillations intensified by reduction of renal mass or by mineralocorticoid elevations. These may lead via increased vascular permeability and underperfusion to vessel damage.
