Religious patients with generalized anxiety disorder were given religious psychotherapy in addition to supportive psychotherapy anxiolytic drugs. Those receiving religious psychotherapy showed significantly more rapid improvement in anxiety symptoms than those who received supportive psychotherapy and drugs only. Thus, religious patients may require a different form of psychotherapy.

Pimozide, a dopamine receptor antagonist, dopamine uptake inhibitor and L‐type calcium channel blocker, is used in children suffering from Tourette syndrome (TS), but its effect on frequently comorbid attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is unknown. We have characterized the cognitive effects of pimozide and haloperidol in TS in relation to comorbid ADHD. Sixty‐six consecutive outpatients with TS (DSM‐III‐R), ages 7–16, were randomly assigned to pimozide, haloperidol or medication‐free clinical treatment and evaluated cognitively after 6 weeks. ABSTRACTThe difficulty in the relationships among the social sciences, psychiatry and epidemiology is important because it inhibits incremental growth of scientific knowledge regarding human behavior. This in turn handicaps coping with social, psychological and cultural perturbations which currently threaten human existence. A major reason for the difficulty in the relationships is the presence of divergent views among the various relevant disciplines with regard to the nature of the scientific process. This article presents an outline of the scientific process modelled on those sciences which focus on living systems. Growth in scientific knowledge is seen to occur as a result of a spiral movement in which articulating conceptual and operational transactions alternate. A problem of our time is that parts of the spiral are often disengaged and conducted independently in a way that makes impossible the incremental synthesis of theory, hypotheses, premisses and data.

First, family research with the focus on the concept of communication deviance is reviewed. Then, the link between family factors and cognitive characteristics in the offspring is elaborated on. Research on cognitive dysfunctions with a basis in a vulnerability model is the theme of the next section. Finally, psychosocial and cognitive treatment programmes are outlined and discussed.

Serum phenylalanine and tyrosine levels were measured in 26 patients with severe depression before and after receiving electroconvulsive therapy. The phenylalanine:tyrosine [P:T] ratio declined significantly for those responding to treatment but not for nonresponders. These findings are discussed in relation to tetrahydrobiopterin, the essential cofactor for the formation of noradrenaline, dopamine and serotonin and the hydroxylation of phenylalanine to tyrosine.

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this paper is to inquire into what interests psychologists might have in epidemiological approaches to the study of psychopathology, what psychologists have contributed in the past, and what they might be expected to contribute in the future. This inquiry starts with a consideration of epidemiological findings and issues that should command the interests of psychologists: differences between treated rates and untreated rates of psychiatric disorders, relations of psychiatric disorders to gender and socioeconomic status, and problems of case identification and diagnosis. My own experience with these issues and problems is discussed. An argument is made that there are important needs for the expertise of psychologists in psychiatric epidemiology and compelling reasons for them to enter the field in greater numbers than they have in the past.

Twenty‐eight asymptomatic relatives from 7 Chinese families with Huntington's disease (HD) received psychosocial assessment. One third of these subjects (n= 9) had symptoms of anxiety and depression that warranted a Present State Examination (PSE) diagnosis. One quarter of these subjects (n= 8) would contemplate suicide if their predictive testing indicated a high risk of having the disease.
