A new inventory (EMBU) to assess the own memories of parental rearing behaviour was constructed. EMBU is comprised of 81 questions grouped in 15 subscales and two additional questions referring to consistency and strictness of parental rearing behaviour to be answered in a four‐step scale for the father and for the mother separately. The subscales cover such rearing practices as for example overinvolvement, affection, overprotectiveness, guilt engendering, rejection.152 healthy subjects of both sexes (108 males and 44 females) completed the inventory. The item analysis showed that both parents attained similar scores in about half of the questions. Fathers scored higher in items referring to strictness, punishment and a low degree of involvement wheareas mothers scored higher in items referring to involvement and affection. A principal component factor analysis permitted the hypothesized subscales to be identified. An analysis of the internal consistency of the subscales revealed a high frequency of significant internal correlations. A principal component factor analysis of the total scores of the 15 subscales allowed three main dimensions of rearing behaviour to be identified quite close to those reported in similar studies in the literature where other scales had been use

This paper describes a clinically based scale elaborated for the evaluation of drug taking behaviour. The scale is a composite scale that includes subscales for drug taking behaviour, social functioning, social identity and belonging and mental health. The scale is used in different evaluation projects from surveys to treatment research, and the experiences as well as reliability testing are described. Finally, the paper contains a manual for the use of the scale.

Pre‐ and postoperative psychiatric symptoms were compared in 85 patients with anterior communicating aneurysms and 73 of these cases were followed up to determine the long‐term results. Patients with acute and chronic schizophreniz were examined for T andFc receptor‐bearing lymphocytes in blood by means of rosette techniques. The patients had normal numbres of peripheral blood lumphocyte. The percentage iof T lymphocytes in patients with acute schizophrenia was reduced (60 ± 2%) comlpared with controls (66 ± 1 %) and patients with chronic schizophrenia (67 ± 3 %). The total number of T lymphocytes was significantly decreased in patients with acute schizophrenia (1, 238 ± 89 cells/mm3,p<0.02) compared with controls (1, 538 ± 157 cells/mm3), while patients with chronic schizophrenia had slightly elevated numbers (1, 778 ± 200 cells/mm3). the percentage and total numbers of Fc receptor‐bearing lumphocutes were normal in both patients groups. A cohort of 624 children, candidates for adoption as infants, were investigated at 11 and 15 years of age. At 11 years these children ran a greater risk than classmates of developing nervous disturbances and symptoms of maladjustment, regardless of whether they were growing up in adoptive home, a foster home or with their biological mother. At 15 years there was little difference in adjustment between the adopted children and their classmates, whereas children growing up in foster homes or with their biological mothers displayed a high proportion of social maladjustment and/or underachievement at school. The implications of these findings for child placement policies are discussed.

The synaptic membrane protein D2 was measured in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from patients with delirium tremens and related clinical states immediately after admission to the hospital before treatment was initiated and again after recovery. During this period of on average 5 days duration the concentration of D2 increased to double normal value possibly indicating increased breakdown of old synapses during the process of readaptation to the alcohol free state. Out of a total admission cohort of 1,934 patients 162 and 101 patients remained continuously in hospital for 6 months and 1 year respectively. The study describes the characteristics of these patients and at each stage compares them with those who were discharged on a number of social and clinical variables.
