Patients attending a clinic were ascertained for psychiatric morbidity by a general practitioner and reascertained by a psychiatrist. The agreement ranged from 84% for neurosis and 60% for psychosis. The differences were mainly due to a lack of the depression category in the general practitioner's classification. One year incidence of psychiatric morbidity was 35.7 per 1,000 with anxiety state and depression as the two most common disorders. Depression mainly manifested as masked depression with somatic complaints.

The feasibility of single daily dosing of lithium carbonate was tested in eight recurrent manic‐depressives being treated with lithium prophylaxis. The patients received their entire 24‐h maintenance dose at 8:00 p.m. for 12 consecutive days. The suitability of single daily dosing was determined by comparing 1) lithium trough levels', 2) lithium kinetic parameters of half‐life, clearance, and volume of distribution; and 3) renal function parameters of serum creatinine, creatinine clearance, and mean 24‐h urine output during the initial divided daily dosage trial and the subsequent single daily dosage trial. The observation of no significant changes in either serum half‐lives or renal lithium clearance levels supports the conclusion that the average steady‐state lithium serum concentration (Cp88) is unchanged by conversion to single daily doses. This study assessed the occurrence of assaultive behavior in a group of suicidal patients who were in psychiatric hospitals, many for long periods of time. Of the 94 suicidal patients, 42 (45%) patients physically assaulted other persons at least once in the 3 months preceding the survey. Although many patients manifested active psychotic psychopathology at the time of the survey, there were no significant differences between assaultive and non‐assaultive suicidal patients in terms of the presence of psychosis. The sex, race, primary psychiatric diagnosis, and length of stay of patients also were not related to the occurrence of assaultive behavior in suicidal patients.Only youth and the presence of seizure disorders were related to increased risk of assaultive behavior in hospitalized suicidal patients. The serum lithium concentration was determined around the clock in patients treated with conventional tablets given once daily, in the evening, and in patients treated with slow‐release tablets given twice daily, in the morning and in the evening. Curve shapes differed markedly in the two groups, with much wider variation of serum concentrations in the former than in the latter. The records of 421 psychiatric patients were analysed by a consistent method, allowing an optimal use of indicant‐patterns. It was assumed that such a procedure would give a satisfactory predictive capacity, even for operational criteria as for example choice of treatment, duration of stay in hospital, or a global evaluation of outcome. The study demonstrates, however, that fundamental changes in the data‐base are necessary. Ninety unipolar endogenous depressives and 38 neurotic depressives with distinct depressive episodes were questioned concerning deaths of parents, siblings, children or partners, and separation from children (leaving the parental home) or from important partners. The age of the patients at the time of the event was compared with their age during the depressive episodes. The results indicate that significantly more neurotic depressives than endogenous depressives had experienced the loss of a close person in the year before a depression. When the loss experiences were divided up, however, it became clear that the difference was due only to separations, and in particular to separations from an important partner.
