ABSTRACT—In a long‐term follow‐up study of 44 female alcoholics, the women's childhood history of family violence was found to be related to violence in partner relationship as an adult and to outcome of treatment. The number of violent relations experienced during childhood was significantly related to a repetitive pattern of violent partnerships after treatment, which added to a poor outcome. The small number of selected women studied limits the generalization of data. However, treatment intervention in violent partner relationships of female alcoholics probably would benefit long‐term

ABSTRACT—Platelet MAO activity was measured in 75 hospitalized depressed patients and in 31 healthy subjects. Plasmas post dexamethasone cortisol levels were examined in 73 patients. Results indicate that higher platelet MAO activity does not occur in all, but only in male major depressed patients. No relationship between changes of MAO activity and specific clinical subtypes was found. Platelet MAO activity is not different between DST suppressors and DST non suppressors. ABSTRACT—Review of recent litterature with emphasis on growth, development and epidemiology of eating disorders and diabetes reveals many common features of the conditions. Thus we hypothesize more concurrence than would occur by chance alone. At present epidemiological evidence is inconclusive, but prevalence of eating disorder seems increased in insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM). Over a period of 25 years five cases (all female) of diabetes were found in a consecutive series of 242 patients with eating disorders treated at the Child Psychiatric and Psychiatric Clinics at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen, Denmark. This is a six‐fold increase in prevalence of IDDM. IDDM preceded eating disorder (anorexia nervosa (AN)/bulimia(B)) in four of the five cases, and contributed significantly to the psychopathology found: the more, the earlier the age at onset of IDDM. ABSTRACT—In a study of 98 cases of deliberate self harm, a high correlation was obtained between a diagnosis of Major Depressive Disorder (M.D.D.) and scores on both the Hamilton Rating Scale for depression (HRS) and the Suicide Intent Scale (SIS). There was also a high correlation between HRS and SIS scores. A higher score on HRS and SIS correlated with increasing age, as also did a diagnosis of M.D.

ABSTRACT—In a controlled, clinical, multicentre trial comprising a total of 43 patients (17 men and 26 women) citalopram was compared double‐blindly with amitriptyline. Nineteen patients of each group were classified as endogenously depressed, whereas four patients of the citalopram group and one of the amitriptyline group were classified as non‐endogenously depressed. The patients were seriously ill with a high frequency of previous depressive episodes and of mental disorders among their closest relatives. Thirteen of the patients in either group had received antidepressants without satisfactory effect before entry into the trial. Each patient was treated for a period of at least 3 weeks with daily citalopram doses of 30–60 mg or daily amitriptyline doses of 75–225 mg. A statistically significant reduction of MADRS scores (total scores as well as each of the 10 individual items) was recorded in both groups. The only difference between the groups was a trend towards a better effect on sleep disturbances in the amitriptyline group. Side‐effects were recorded more frequently in the amitriptyline group than in the citalopram group, global assessment of side effects being significantly different in favour of citalopram. It is concluded that citalopram is an effective and safe drug in the treatment of endogenous depression ‐ probably as efficacious as amitriptyline, but with fewer

ABSTRACT—The lifetime version of the Inventory to Diagnose Depression (IDDL) is a 22‐item self‐report scale designed to diagnose a lifetime history ofDSM‐IIImajor depressive disorder (MDD). One hundred and sixty‐four first‐degree relatives of healthy control probands completed the IDDL and were interviewed with the Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS). The IDDL had good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha = 0.92), split‐half reliability (Spearman‐Brown coefficient = 0.90), and all of the item total correlations were significant. The lifetime prevalence of MDD was nonsignificantly higher in the IDDL than the DIS (14.8% vs. 11.7%).
