摘要:
Although each individual enters life with a genetic potential for varying degrees of health, the quality of the diet throughout life is a major determinant of how well a person is able to cope with environmental stress, infection, lifestyle variables, and acute and chronic disease. This article reflects the author's wide experience and his recognition that, although hereditary and metabolic disorders affect some individuals, most ill health and premature death is preventable. It points to the importance of a multidisciplinary effort on the part of both social and health scientists in eliminating much of the current costs—both monetary and social, to individuals and society—of treating disease and disability.

摘要:
When severe infection or trauma alters metabolism, glutamine utilization is increased, often exceeding the level normally produced in the body. It plays an important role in the metabolic processes related to recovery. Prolonged total parenteral nutrition use is nutritionally beneficial; however, it may enhance gut atrophy, thereby reducing intestinal hormone production, decreasing brush border enzyme activity, and increasing gut permeability. This review looks at supplemental glutamine in total parenteral nutrition and its benefits to host tissues.
