In 1967 the Agriculture Research Service, now the department's Science and Research Administration, established the Atwater Memorial Lectureship to honor the memory of the gifted scientist Wilbur Olin Atwater, Ph.D., the department's first chief of research in human nutrition. The award is made annually to one whom the selection committee considers to have made an outstanding contribution to nutrition or who has advanced public understanding of the role the science plays in meeting the world's food needs. It is not an easy choice. Dr. Robert E. Olson won the award this year and presented the Atwater lecture before the general assembly of the American College of Physicians in Boston in April. Nutrition Today has published several of these lectures that were worthy of our readers' attention. It is pleased to add Dr. Olson's perceptive remarks to this list.
