The growing population of older adults in the United States presents challenges for health professionals, such as nutrition educators and dietitians, to provide nutrition services that best meet older adults' diverse needs. The National Dairy Council sponsored an expert panel to learn more about older adults' eating habits and nutritional status, their nutrient needs, and dietary guidance and policies directed to this population. This article highlights and updates information presented by the panel.

The frail elderly make up a group particularly vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies. To develop feasible interventions that will keep the frail elderly healthy and strong at home, we need to learn more about their nutritional and health status, so we performed an intervention study randomizing 161 frail elderly into 1 of 4 intervention groups: nutrient-dense foods, exercise, combination (nutrient-dense foods and exercise), or placebo (control). When taste and smell performance, appetite, dietary intake, body composition, and several biochemical parameters were studied after 17 weeks of intervention, the group receiving nutrient-dense foods had increased blood nutrient values and decreased homocysteine levels. The results also suggest a beneficial effect on bone mass and density for those consuming enriched foods compared to controls, although this needs further clinical confirmation. Exercise preserved lean body mass and energy intake. Nutrient-dense foods coupled with exercise may be both successful and feasible interventions in public health programs.

As health professionals, one effective way to reach consumers is through the media, either by contacting journalists when you have new information or, usually, by journalists contacting you for your perspective as an expert on a topic. Just as you would readily accept a high-profile speaking engagement to promote your work or organization, you should also eagerly take advantage of speaking with the media. The following article includes tips to help you conduct successful media interviews.

Bioengineered foods, functional foods, herbals, and botanicals are all part of the rapidly expanding field of modified foods. Safety monitoring and regulation of these foods are needed to protect the consumer and to ensure ongoing quality improvement. Science-based health claims also need to be effectively communicated to the consumer if public health is to be enhanced through disease reduction and lower healthcare costs.
