Ancient myth attributes menstrual cycle-related distress to an antifeminist deity's curse on Eve for collaborating with the serpent in convincing Adam to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the Garden of Eden. Down through the ages premenstrual distress has been regarded as a possible explanation for a variety of cyclical psychosomatic changes. Even during Victorian times, when the mere mention of the reproductive system was considered vulgar, the lawyers for Miss Lizzie Borden of Fall River, Massachusetts, based their plea for lack of premeditation in the ax murders of her parents partially on the grounds that it was right before “that time of the month.” In medical circles, premenstrual distress was regarded largely as a figment of the imagination. It was not until the 1930s that the myriad signs and symptoms called premenstrual syndrome, or PMS, were first described as a syndrome. The syndrome has been thought to warrant medical investigation and treatment for only about a decade. Today, women suffering from premenstrual symptomatology are faced with a bewildering array of nutritional treatments, drug therapies, psychotherapies, PMS clinics and PMS support groups. The cause of PMS is still unknown in spite of this rampant proliferation of services. PMS vies with toxemia of pregnancy as a condition about which theories of its causation, prevention and cure abound while proof of efficacy is lacking. This article reviews the evidence supporting some of the more popular nutritional theories and treatments of PMS.

Outcomes of drug and nutrient interactions may be beneficial or adverse. Risk assessment for drug and nutrient interactions requires knowledge of the drug(s) being used; their pharmacology, indication and side effects; the age, disease and organ function and nutritional status of the patient receiving these drugs, and the regimen including the drug list, dose, duration and frequency of drug administration, the diet, nutrient supplements and the timing of drug administration in relation to food or supplement use. Intervention to prevent the occurrence of a drug and nutrient interaction necessitates weighing the advantages against the disadvantages of changing drug and diet orders.
