The reports of experimentally induced deficiencies and suboptimal status of manganese in humans suggest that manganese may be more critical for human nutriture than previously realized. However, the quantities that are found in typical diets in the United States are often lower than that needed to maintain positive balance. The mineral may be particularly important for women who are prone to osteoporosis because of its role in bone formation and stability.

摘要:
A number of Federal, professional and health organizations have published dietary recommendations for healthy Americans that consider the relationship of diet to health and the reduction of risk of chronic disease. Recommendations for nutrient adequacy, body weight, dietary intakes of fat (including saturated and polyunsaturated fatty acids), cholesterol, carbohydrate (including complex carbohydrate or starch, dietary fiber and refined sugars), sodium and alcohol made by 10 organizations are summarized. Additional dietary recommendations by these and other groups, including those for population subgroups such as infants, children and women, are also presented. Finally, examples of translations of recommendations into food guidance for healthy Americans are cited.
