This is the first of a two-part review on the role of the chemical senses in nutrition. It will focus on the nature of these sensory systems, methods to assess their function and their relationship to food selection in normal healthy humans. The second part, which will appear in the next issue, will highlight clinical issues related to the chemical senses.

The purpose of this and a paper to appear in the next issue is to present an overview of the role of Ω-3 fatty acids in growth and development and in health and disease.Part I discusses w-3 fatty acid sources and metabolism, the elongation and desaturation of α-linolenic acid and the role of ω-3 fatty acids in pregnancy and fetal growth, human milk and infant feeding, childhood and aging. Part II consists of an overview of the subject as it relates to cardiovascular disease (hypolipidemic, anti-thrombotic and antihypertensive effects) and inflammation, immunology and cancer. Dietary implications conclude the paper.

This article reviews the factors that make AIDS patients especially vulnerable to unproven and costly medical and nutritional therapies currently being used by those who are at high risk or already ill. Purported rationales, evidence of therapies' effectiveness and suggestions for improving the nutritional support and quality of life of AIDS patients who are receiving conventional therapies are detailed.
