Thirteen years ago, Harold H. Sandstead, M.D., then assistant professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University, published one of the first comprehensive articles about nutritional zinc here in Nutrition Today.To many, Dr. Sandstead's article was truly an eye-opener for what it revealed about zinc—until then an obscure nutrient. Many of his vivid illustrations depicting the effects of zinc deficiency (some of which are reproduced here) had never been seen before. As a result of this and other efforts, we now know that zinc is essential. It is fitting that Ananda Prasad, one of Dr. Sandstead's coworkers in the Middle East, should bring us up to date with this crystal anniversary sequel.
