摘要:
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is currently undertaking an extensive reevaluation and revision of nutrition labeling requirements for FDA-regulated foods.1The primary driving force for these revisions is the consensus reached by the scientific community on diet and health relationships, but many other issues are contributory. The implementation of bilateral and multilateral trade and other agreements over the years has resulted in increased interest in and efforts by the U.S. government to include global perspectives among the many factors to be considered when nutrition labeling positions are evaluated. This article specifically focuses on international nutrition labeling comparisons by briefly outlining the FDA's recent proposals and the Canadian, European Community, and Codex positions on nutrition labeling. These comparisons were developed for the bilateral technical working group on Packaging and Labelling of Agricultural, Food, Beverage and Certain Related Goods for Human Consumption that was established as part of Canada-U.S. Trade Commission activities.

Monitoring the addition of nutrients to processed food is difficult since many are used for functions other than enhancing nutrient content. Amounts present must be declared only if nutritional claims are made or voluntary nutrient labelling is provided on processed foods. Nutrients added for other purposes must appear on the list of ingredients where amounts are not given.
