The proposal by the Food and Drug Administration in 1987 to reverse its longstanding regulation of prohibiting explicit health messages on food labels posed problems for the scientific community. It proposed to allow well-supported healthrelated claims on food labels. Concern about this change centered on the fine line between claims based on “valid, reliable scientific evidence” and false and misleading claims. This paper provides a perspective of the meaning of “well-supported.”

Will the Bush administration and the new Congress be supportive of nutrition issues in the next two years? Are the deficit and other national concerns so great that nutrition will not be on the front burner or even the back burner of legislative issues? There is every reason to believe that the most critical issues will get a fair to good audience especially as the Congress hears from its constituents on the issues. The 101st Congress will see the reintroduction of the nutrition monitoring legislation as well as some new comprehensive food labeling bills. The new report that describes shortages in allied health personnel and its impact on the future of health care delivery is the first major study that Congress has made of allied health. Dietitians are among the groups studied in depth in that report. Nutrition legislation will find its place in between discussions of the debt, the homeless and taxes.
