This article discusses national goals for older Americans' health, some likely indicators of their nutritional status and current practices with respect to screening. It describes progress made by a new Nutrition Screening Initiative to increase the amount and quality of nutrition screening among those older than 65 years of age. The initiative is led by the American Dietetic Association, the American Academy of Family Physicians and the National Council on Aging. It includes an advisory committee of 35 key health and aging organizations and professionals. Among its goals is more effective incorporation of routine nutritional screening and care into the nation's system of health care delivery. We conclude with some future hopes and possibilities for better recognition of nutritional problems among older Americans.
