The third annual Food Festival is scheduled for September 13–19, 1987. This year approximately 11,000 supermarkets nationwide, representing more than 65 supermarket chains, will participate with their local American Heart Association volunteers from 55 affiliates. The festival is built around the theme “It's high time to lower cholesterol” and is designed to increase public awareness by bringing education to consumers “at the point of purchase” where critical decisions are made.

Health and Welfare Canada released the publication “Nutrition in Pregnancy—National Guidelines.” The guidelines were prepared by an advisory group composed of practitioners and academics representing the practical and scientific aspects of medicine, nursing, and nutrition. A consensus was reached on such controversial matters as acceptable levels of prenatal weight gain, the consumption of aspartame during pregnancy and maintenance of dental health of pregnant women and infants. Other topics covered include dietary practices during pregnancy, nutritional needs of pregnant adolescents and use of herbal teas.

In the last 50 years, caffeine, a methylxanthine, has been alleged to be associated with many forms of cancer, cardiovascular disease, reproductive disorders, birth defects and disease of the nervous system including behavioral effects. Whether these allegations represent a cause for concern can be best assessed by an examination of caffeine sources, consumption levels and the scientific evidence relating caffeine intake to health problems.
