This article delineates an approach to CHD management, therapeutic nutrition, that integrates a broad-based scientific treatment modality with traditional values pertaining to food. The current approach, as espoused by the American Heart Association, and two others—the very low-fat model and the Mediterranean diet—are critiqued.

摘要:
Opera and other professional singers are susceptible to the “diva syndrome.” This set of maladaptive eating behaviors and lifestyle characteristics, which predispose singers to obesity, involve frequent binge eating and food rituals for pre-and postperformance. Singers' atypical schedules, frequent social obligations involving food and drink, and financial and emotional dependence upon performing compound the problem. The authors, with complementary interests in nutrition and music, present a thought-provoking analysis of the problem.

Louis Grivetti is Professor of Nutrition and currently Interim Chair of the Graduate Program in Geography at the University of California, Davis. He conducts research on human dietary patterns, using historical and contemporary perspectives, especially among African, Mediterranean, and Southeast Asian societies and ethnic populations in the United States. He is co-author with W. J. Darby and P. Ghalioungui of the award-winning book: Food: The Gift of Osiris (Academic Press, 1979).
