摘要:
SummaryA cardiological examination is made of 54 neurologically healthy sibs and 27 parents than 50 years of age. No raised incidence of ischaemic heart disease is found. The following additional observations are made.1. Three sibs have an obviously pathological ECG; two show suspected cardiomyopathy and one an atrioventricular block.2. One mother has ECG changes indicative of myocardial damage, but a coronary origin cannot be ruled out, in view of diabetes mellitus.3. Four sibs have signs of increased sympathetic tone.4. Isolated cardiomyopathy may occur in families with Friedreich's ataxia in a slighter degree than when combined with the neurological syndrome, although such a relation is not yet proved.

摘要:
SummaryThe ECG is recorded at rest, as well as during and after a work test, in 8 patients classified as “atypical” cases of Friedreich's ataxia. The ECG is also recorded in the same way in 34 of the cases excluded from the basic material, including 15 with the Roussy‐Levy syndrome and 14 with cerebellar ataxia. The following observations are made.1. Of the “atypical” types of Friedreich's ataxia, a syndrome with a suspected dominant mode of inheritance in three sibs is the only one associated with signs of myocardial damage. The localized T wave inversion, accentuated during the orthostatic and exercise tests, differs from the ECG changes recorded in typical Friedreich's ataxia.2. None of the closely related syndromes with spinal and cerebellar degeneration is combined with signs of heart disease.3. One patient with a basal ganglionic syndrome, concluded to be a chronic encephalopathy, has a cardiomyopathy with haemodynamic changes similar to those in Friedreich's ataxia.4. The results confirm the diagnostic value of cardiomyopathy, although it is not pathognomonic of Friedreich
