RésuméDans notre pays, il serait désirable de pouvoir se proeurer une préparation de vitamine C conservée, qui serait particulièrement avantageuse sous une forme concentrée. On a pu obtenir de semblables préparations avec du jus d'orange et de citron, mais elles sont d'un coût de fabrication trop élevé.On trouve actuellement une préparation pour laquelle il a été fait beaucoup de réclame: le »Naranina d'après le Dr Trigo».—Si les indications qui l'accompagnent étaient exactes, cette préparation conviendrait bien à un usage médico‐pro‐phylatique. L'auteur a fait un examen de sa teneur en vitamine C. D'après les explications données dans les brochures jointes au produit, 1 litre de Naranjina correspond à 160 oranges, c'est‐à‐dire qu'une orange (on citron) donne 6,25 cc. de Naranjina.Les expériences furent faites sur des animaux, d'après la méthode de Göthlin. Pour le contrôle positif, on a employé des cobayes, qui furent nourris avec les aliments‐fondamentaux de Göthlin‐Sherman, avec addition de jus d'oranges fraîches (oranges de Messine ou de Valence). Des animaux qui eurent 0,5 cc. par jour gardérent leur poids pendant les 70 jours de l'expérience et ne présentèrent aucun signe de maladie. Les animaux employés pour le contrôle négatif qui n'curent qui les »aliments fondamentaux», présentèrent des signes évidents de scorbut et moururent au bout de 26—32 jours. Dans d'autres séries, on donna aux animaux du Naranjina (orange ou citron). En se basant sur les indications de la brochure, on calcula les doses à donner en addition aux »aliments fondamentaux», et les animaux reçurent de 0,06 cc. à 0,75 cc. de Naranjina concentré.Tous les animaux moururent du scorbut au bout d'un temps correspondent presque exactement à celni des contrôles négatifs.L'expérience a done démontré que les explications des brochures distribuées avec la préparation n'ont pu être vérifiées avec le Naranjina acheté et examiné par moi.—On ne peut done considérer ce produit comme préparation concentrée de vitamine C. Les résultats obtenus ici sont en opposition avec les terms des explications données comme réclame avec la préparation. Il est possible que cela provienne du temps écoulé entre la fabrication et la consommation du produit, qui a été examiné en différentes occasions.—Il faudra cependant recommencer l'expertise.—En tous cas il sera nécessaire d'exiger des garanties sur la teneur en facteurs

SummaryIn a case of chronic malnutrition (infantile atrophy), metabolism experiments were conducted over a period of 106 days, 60 of which the infant actually spent on the metabolism bed. In five periods, covering 41 days, there was a gain in weight. The retentions of sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium and nitrogen were calculated per kilogram gain in weight from these five periods, and compared with normal figures previously obtained by Swanson.It was found that in respect to the retentions of sodium and potassium, the atrophic infant differed markedly from the normal infants. The sodium retention was low, probably indicating that the new tissues formed were not holding a normal amount of interstitial fluids. The potassium retention was very high, both absolutely and in relation to the retention of nitrogen. It is argued that this increased retention of potassium indicates either the repair of intracellular dehydration, or the formation of cells abnormally rich in fluids.

SummaryIn the Stockholm Hospital for Infectious Diseases the scarlet fever and diphtheria cases over a six year period have been studied with reference to the course of these diseases in tonsillectomized patients. 104 cases of scarlet fever and 71 cases of diphtheria all of whom had had previous tonsillectomies were compared with a suitable series of controls consisting of 3 times as many patients. Theresultsin regard to thescarlet fever casesare as follows:1. There probably exists no difference in regard to the severity of onset as estimated by the angina and eruption in tonsillectomized and non‐tonsillectomized individuals.2. The number of cases with complications as well as the different complications occur on the whole in the same frequency in the two groups (No statistically determinable difference).3. Tonsillectomized patients cause just as many infections as do the non‐tonsillectomized after they return to their homes, thus indicating that the contagiousness at the later stage of the disease is not dependent on the presence or absence of the tonsils.4. Hemolytic streptococci can be demonstrated later in the convalescent period in non‐tonsillectomized than in tonsillectomized individuals.Theresultsin regard to thediphtheriacases are as follows:1. Diphtheria of the pharynx is much more frequent among diphtheria patients with tonsils than among those who have had a tonsillectomy. Nasal diphtheria is common among the latter.2. Malignant diphtheria occurs considerably oftener among non‐tonsillectomized than among tonsillectomized patients.3. The frequency of complications is less among tonsillectomized than among non‐tonsillectomized
