ABSTRACT.An 18 years follow‐up study of 105 males born in 1962/63 with birthweight ≤ 2500 g was made at the military draft board examinations in 1981. The medical and psychological tests were compared to the tests of the total cohort of 35 728 Norwegian conscripts. The early neonatal mortality in the study was 15.2 %, and of those examined at 18 years of age was 6.7 % unfit for military service, compared to 6.2 % in the total cohort. Ten organ systems were analyzed, significantly increased frequency of unfitness being found only for the vision. Intelligence testing was done on 71 of the studied subjects, and the mean was the same as the national average. Children with weight‐for‐date centile<10 at birth had the same general intelligence at 18 years as the national average. However, the weight and height at adult age were significantly correlated to the weight‐for‐date at birth. ABSTRACT.An 18 years follow‐up study of 55 males with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia born in 1962/63 was done at the military draft board examinations in 1981. The medical and psychological tests were compared to the tests of the total cohort of Norwegian conscripts. Of those examined at 18 years of age 7.3 % was unfit for military service, compared to 6.2 % in the total cohort. Ten organ systems were clinically examined with no significantly increased frequency of unfitness among the index cases. Intelligence testing was done on 39 of the studied subjects, the mean score being the same as in the total cohort of Norwegian conscripts. ABSTRACT.Height, sitting height (SH) and subischeal leg length (SLL) were determined in 5 boys and 11 girls with hypophosphataemic (vitamin D‐resistant) rickets, aged 4–14 years. Their average height was ‐2.05 ± 1.22 SDS, and SLL (average value: ‐2.59 ± 1.18 SDS) was more reduced than SH (average value: ‐0.91 ± 1.37 SDS). SLL and SH were abnormally low in 11 and 3 of the patients respectively. The difference between SLL and SH was abnormally low in only 4 of the children, indicating a mild degree of disproportion. None of the patients had relatively long legs. There was no relation between height and the degree of disproportion, a finding which tallied with the relatively mild degree of disproportion. ABSTRACT.Sitting height (SH) and sub‐ischial leg length (SLL) were measured in 10 boys and 16 girls with precocious puberty; the patients were aged from 1.5 to 13.4 years at the time. Standard deviation scores (SDS) calculated for chronological age and bone age showed higher scores for SH than for SLL in all but two patients, both girls: the differences between the SDS for SH and SLL were more marked in the boys. ABSTRACT.Forty‐one full term intrauterine growth retarded (IUGR) babies of different maternal etiologies viz. maternal undernutrition (12), small maternal size (12), toxaemia of pregnancy (9) and idiopathic (8) were studied for growth pattern during first 9 months of life. Eighteen fullterm and 11 preterm who were appropriate for gestational age served as controls. These mothers were comparable for age, parity, socioeconomic status, weight and height (except in small size mothers), haemoglobin and plasma albumin (except in undernourished group). The various anthropometric parameters studied were weight, crown‐heel length, head circumference, their velocities and ponderal index. The IUGR babies of undernourished mothers had lowest means for weight, crown‐heel length and skull circumference. The babies of small sized mothers suffered most in crown‐heel length followed by weight. The head growth was not affected in these babies. The IUGR babies of mothers with toxaemia of pregnancy demonstrated a catch up growth for all three parameters. The IUGR babies of idiopathic group showed a spurt in weight gain around 3 to 6 months and a similar spurt for crown heel length and head circumference was observed between 6 to 9 months of age. ABSTRACT.The interferon‐producing ability of peripheral blood mononuclear leukocytes obtained from children with undue susceptibility to infections was investigated. Patients were grouped according to three clinical patterns, i.e. children with mainly upper respiratory tract infec‐tions, with lower respiratory tract infections and with frequent middle ear infections. There WBS no evidence of impaired mean interferon‐a responses to the inducers Sendai virus and beta‐hemolytic Group G streptococci in patients compared with control children, and there were no differences in this respect between the patient subgroups. A tendency to increased Concanavalin A‐induced interferon‐y production was seen in patients, particularly those with middle ear infections. Leukocytes from patients displayed a higher proliferative response to the T cell mitogens Concanavalin A and Lens culinaris lectin. In a minority of patients (5128) reproducibly low interferon responses to Sendai virus were found but only one of these patients showed a response below the ‐2 SD limit for the control group. The results therefore indicate no major defects in the interferon responses of infection‐prone children, and at the most suggest that a minority of such patients may be low responders to a viral interferon inducer. ABSTRACT.Ampicillin and gentamicin were given continuously i.v. to 36 newborn infants using a dosage schedule and the results were compared with those obtained in an earlier study including 88 infants who received individually calculated dosages. With the dosage schedule the variation in the serum concentrations of antibiotics was smaller in the same child throughout the treatment course, but greater between the infants. The 95 % limits for the serum concentrations of antibiotics were, however, nearly the same in the two treatment groups, and the use of a dosage schedule is therefore recommended. Serum gentamicin concentration should be assayed about 3 half lives (18 hours) after beginning the treatment, and dosage adjustment be made if the serum gentamicin concentration is outside 3–5 μg/

ABSTRACT.During cardiopulmonary resuscitation, when an intravenous line is not present or easily obtainable, the intracardiac injection of drugs has been a traditional route of choice. However, the intracardiac administration may be associated with serious complications. We have given epinephrine endotracheally to ten newborn infants who all had bradycardia that did not respond to ventilation with 100 % oxygen, to heart compression or to bicarbonate infusion. Epinephrine, 0.1 mg/ml was injected directly into the tracheal tube, and ventilation was immediately continued. A standardized procedure has been chosen by giving 0.25 ml to the infants weighing2500 g. All infants had a return to normal heart rhythm within seconds after installation of the epinephrine solution. The establishment of an intravenous line in small infants can be difficult, and the infants are usually intubated before the injection of epinephrine is considered. The endotracheal route should therefore be the first route of choice in the absence of a rapidly obtainable vascular access.

ABSTRACT.Plasma branched‐chain amino acids and urinary C‐peptide‐creatinine excretion was determined at 3, 41/2 and 6 months of age in a group of 50 infants who were either breast‐fed or artificially fed and selected at random. The average concentrations of valine in plasma and C‐peptide in urine as well as the ratio between C‐peptide and creatinine in urine were 2–3 times higher (p<0.01) in artificially fed as compared to breast‐fed infants at all the ages studied. Plasma valine values correlated significantly with the urinary C‐peptide/creatinine ratio (r= 0.76,p<0.01), which suggests that the enhanced insulin response induced by the artificial formula is related to it
