Information technology makes it easier than ever to collect, store, and disseminate personal information, then use it to carry out business and political decisions. Federal legislation limits corporate and government manipulation of personal data, and private companies are finding that they must do the same or risk lawsuits from irate customers, clients, and rejected prospects. This article explores the concept of privacy, describes the major computer threats to personal privacy and the changing legal environment, and recommends how organizations can establish internal privacy codes for their own protection.

People often have lower performance levels in groups than their individual capabilities would indicate. This article examines the effect of team size on systems development productivity and overall job performance and recommends techniques to mitigate the negative effects of large team size through the use of such tools and techniques as computer-aided software engineering and object-oriented programming.

During the 1980s, microcomputers provided capabilities for such personal computing and information-handling tasks as financial analysis, word processing, and data base management. The 1990s signal the beginning of a major development period for information technology that supports people working in small groups. As collaborative work groups and business teams become more prevalent, the demand for group decision support systems, or GDSS tools, will increase. The next five years should see a rapid dissemination of GDSS technology into organizations.

Expert systems extend the current commercial advantage of information systems from clerical to intellectual applications. As expert systems increasingly find acceptance in the marketplace, the focus is no longer on successful research, but on successful project management. Return on investment is a critical factor that must be taken into account for a successful expert systems implementation.
