摘要:
In recent years, expert systems technology has been recognized as a way of improving managerial and organizational effectiveness. Most of the related literature available has been introductory in nature or has focused on only one aspect of expert systems development. This article presents a more global organizational view of expert systems to help MIS managers select the most appropriate expert systems applications for their organization

摘要:
The portfolio method is a well-known technique in the strategic business planning arena. This article examines a prototype expert system as an implementation of an enhanced portfolio approach. The purpose of the system is to help users analyze their organization' s existing or planned products, and then it recommends appropriate business strategies for the products. This article describes the underlying conceptual model of the system and its implementation and presents ideas for future developments in this area

摘要:
Microcomputer-based decision support systems (DSSs) offer many advantages over mainframe DSSs, the greatest of which is the cost7sol; benefit ratio. The use of microcomputers, however, causes numerous management control problems. Because of the limitations of microcomputers, IS managers must pay special attention to the design and implementation of microcomputer-based DSSs. With the emergence of AI technology, most managers should benefit from the integration of AI with DSSs. This article addresses issues relevant to the design of intelligent microcomputer-based DSSs from an applications standpoint. The article also presents conceptual frameworks and strategies for implementing such a system

摘要:
There is no inexpensive way to develop or purchase a full-featured executive information system. These are highly sophisticated systems and their cost is beyond the budgets of many organizations. Alternatives are available, however, if an organization is willing to settle for less than a state-of-the-art system. The purpose of this article is to describe some of the alternative strategies available to organizations that want the capabilities of a full-featured system but are constrained from purchasing one because of limited resources

摘要:
Managers at all levels find decision support systems (DSSs) difficult to understand and employ and often inconsistent with the primary functions of management. This article presents a selection of tools and techniques for use in afunctional DSS and identifies which tools best support each of the three levels of management — operational, tactical, and strategic

摘要:
Microcomputer technology has matured to a point at which its successful assimilation depends more on the proper management of personnel and less on the features of the technology. This article presents a case study that demonstrates how lead users can be identified and recruited to provide a support infrastructure to peers throughout the initiation stage within the organization. The article recommends that managers of microcomputer technology develop an understanding of different user types and apply adaptive human resource management practices

摘要:
Professional workstations, the next step in information processing technology, allow systems developers to innovatively interact with a new type of user: the professional. Because they must create a different user interface, systems developers should first consider the various risks involved in designing such a complex and important system. This column discusses the impact professional workstations can have on the enterprise information architecture, a framework for systems development Hugh W. 摘要:
Because no organization can afford to stand still in its efforts to develop information systems, MIS managers must be aware of the changing requirements of users and senior management. Although these changes shouldn' t always interrupt the current work of MIS, sometimes exceptions must be made to keep the organization' s competitive edge. This column offers MIS managers some advice on how to accommodate the constantly changing needs of users.

摘要:
The improper use of commercial data base management systems (DBMSs) has been a major problem throughout the history of data base management. With the emergence of microcomputers, the selection of the appropriate DBMS for a user' s particular applications environment can be difficult. This column reviews and discusses approaches toward evaluating a DBMS and provides examples that illustrate the application of these approaches to microcomputer DBMSs. IS managers would benefit by following this column' s three-step evaluation framework

摘要:
Keeping up with the changing needs of users is a challenging task for the IS department. However, the IS department must do so in order to continue contributing to the organization' s growth by helping it maintain its competitive potential. This column describes a plan used by one IS director to realign his department with user expectations and, at the same time, reorient his management support system to support this new direction.
