AbstractOver two hundred pupils in nine schools were provided with a personal portable computer for a whole school year. One aspect of the research was to assess the impact which high access to information technology (IT) had on the pupils' attitudes to their schools and to the core disciplines: mathematics, English and science. The attitudes of the experimental and control groups (those with and those without portables) to the disciplines and to their schools were measured using 25‐item semantic differential and 28‐item Likert instruments respectively. Factor analysis revealed that positive impacts of high access to IT upon the attitudes of pupils was relatively marginal and confined to instances where the pupils' process‐based IT work transferred to the content domains in their disciplines. AbstractYoung children frequently experience problems when using conventional dictionaries if they cannot spell or even name the word they are looking for. Hence organising words by the way they are spelt is largely unproductive. This paper describes a referencing method for an on‐line concept dictionary where words are accessed via their meaning rather than by alphabetical entry. Concepts and sub‐concepts are linked together in a hierarchy to ensure that the search process is both intuitive and efficient, and takes full advantage of the associative organisation of human memory. The method has been used in a system,DICTOFUN, developed for children aged 8 ‐ 14. Preliminary interactions with children have been promising. Concept mapping proved intuitive and fun to use for children across this age range. 摘要:
AbstractTheSelfSpellprograms provide a multi‐media environment for dyslexic children which uses synthesised speech to augment the written text. In earlier research we established that by encouraging users to enter a rule to help them remember how to spell each word,SelfSpellwas very effective in improving spelling ability. The evaluation study reported here confirmed the efficacy of the rule‐based approach using a group of 11‐year‐old dyslexic children with severe impairments in spelling. Of particular theoretical significance, however, was the finding that use of a mastery learning technique for learning spellings was just as effective as the rule‐based approach. These findings are interpreted in the light of Frith's influential framework for the development of reading and spelling ability. It is suggested that the multimedia presentation approach may provide a uniquely effective method for helping dyslexic children to acquire the ‘alphabetic’ stage of linguist
