The following biographical sketches are necessarily kept as brief as possible and do not purport to be detailed biographies. Included are six main items: name (followed by the office for which the member is a candidate), present work, place and year of birth, college education and degrees with years granted, principal fields of scientific activity in geophysics, and work and principal connections with the AGU. In many cases, more complete biographies of the candidates can be found in one or more of the standard national and regional biographical reference works.

The American Geophysical Union which was established in 1919 by the National Research Council and for more than 50 years operated as an unincorporated affiliate of the National Academy of Sciences, is now a corporation chartered under the laws of the District of Columbia. The Union is dedicated to the furtherance of the sciences of geophysics through the individual efforts of its members and in cooperation with other national and international scientific organizations.

The International Symposium on Underground Waste Management and Artificial Recharge was sponsored by the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), and the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS).Forty‐seven international experts presented papers on the state of the art, regional history, concepts, current problems, laboratory and field investigations, and operational case histories for the management of waste products and artificial recharge in deep underground space. Roy E. Oltman, a retired employee of the U.S. Geological Survey, is the new Treasurer of the International Association of Hydrological Sciences. He succeeds Ralph N. Wilson, who died unexpectedly last May.Oltman was appointed by the IAHS Bureau (Executive Committee) at its June 1973 meeting in the Dipoli Congress Hall, on the Otaniemi Campus of the University of Helsinki, Finland.
