The Coast Guard is maintaining continued interest in oceanography especially as it may have practical application to problems related to ice‐patrol, air‐sea rescue, and other duties with which the service is charged. Ocean‐currents and wind‐drift affect the movement of ice, life‐boats, and of airplanes and rubber boats from airplanes forced down at sea. The state of the sea as indicated by size and character of waves determines largely whether or not a rescue plane can make a successful water‐landing and take‐off. The amount of surf on a beach caused by waves and swells is a controlling factor in the launching and landing of small craft, long a vital interest of the Coast Guard. Much remains to be learned about the icing of a vessel's superstructure at sea and of means of avoiding and combating this condition. Corrosion and fouling are an ever‐present problem wherever vessels and buoys constructed of metal are concerned. Increased air‐traffic over the ocean‐areas has introduced new problems in both oceanography and meteorology. In many respects these sciences are closely interwoven. Oceanic circulation involves large masses of water transporting heat from place to place on the Earth's surface, greatly influencing world climate. Any factors upsetting the normal heat‐transport will be reflected in some form and degree in future weather‐sequences. For example, indications are strong that an abnormal extent of ice in the North Atlantic, resulting in lowered water‐temperatures and less evaporation, reduces during a succeeding period the precipitation in western Europe. It is believed that weather‐patrol ships on station in the interests of cross‐ocean aviation will be in a position to contribute much oceanographic information of value. By necessity this report in a number of respects is identical to one that had to be submitted to the National Research Council on April 15, 1945, but it is appropriate to be repeated here, for the initial conception of the Committee and its potential function were formulated at the last Annual Meeting of the Section of Volcanology, when a symposium was presented on the activity of Parfcutin. The retiring officers then recommended to WILLIAM W. RUBEY, the Chairman of the Division of Geology and Geography of the National Research Council, that a Committee should be formed to integrate, facilitate, and stimulate the study of the eruption and its effect in various fields of science before the record was lost. As the newly elected President of the Section, RICHARD E. FULLER accepted the responsibility of serving as Chairman.
