摘要:
No. But I'm known to be prejudiced in this area. Decide for yourself. One dollar buys your library about 46,000 words of JGR. This amount of material costs over $4.00 in Earth and Planetary Science Letters and Geochima et Cosmochimica Acta, two of the more reasonably priced, commercially published journals and about $9.50 in Geophysical Surveys. But, you say, ‘ Wait a minute! What about the page charge of $80? That's 6.5c per word.’ OK; if there were no page charge, your library would still pay less than $2.40 for those 46,000 wo

摘要:
The strong salinity stratification of the Arctic Ocean prevents substantial ice‐free conditions in winter by suppressing convection and reducing upward heat flux from the Atlantic Water. These conditions would be significantly altered in the sensitive southern Eurasian basin if suggested diversions of western Siberian rivers were accomplishe

摘要:
A comprehensive environmental baseline study of a 24,000‐mi2segment of the outer continental shelf (OCS) is being conducted in the Gulf of Mexico off south Texas by the U.S. Geological Survey, the University of Texas, Texas A&M, Rice University, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and other institutions. The area to be studied extends from the Matagorda peninsula southward to the U.S.‐Mexican boundary and seaward to the 600‐ft depth contour. The $1.5 million research effort in 1975 is a phase of an extended study known as the South Texas OCS Environmental Assessment Program, funded by the Interior Department's Bureau of Land Management and aimed primarily at gathering environmental baseline data prior to exploratory drilling to be undertaken after the scheduled lease sale for the south Texas outer continental

摘要:
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has completed a series of rendezvous in the Atlantic Ocean between four satellites and an old‐fashioned sailing vessel. The purpose was to probe two somewhat recondite features of the sea—internal waves and the Gulf Stream. In seemingly bizarre collaboration, the 220‐ton schoonerWestwardand satellites SMS/Goes, Landsat 1 and 2, and NOAA 4 combed the North Atlantic for eight weeks seeking data on the location and behavior of internal waves and the position and velocity of the Gulf Stream. Choice of the schooner as the surface research vessel was not an act of whimsey: an acoustic echo sounder is more sensitive in the quiet environment of a sailing

摘要:
The Arctic Ice Dynamics Joint Experiment (Aidjex) began its main field experiment on the sea ice north of Point Barrow, Alaska, during March 1975. This marks the start of fourteen months of intensive research activity after many years of preparation, including several trial experiments.C‐130 and R4D cargo aircraft landed on a sea ice runway to establish the main Aidjex camp. Three satellite camps with runways suitable for Twin Otter operations were also set u

摘要:
The Advisory Committee on Continental Shelf Research of the Royal Norwegian Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (NTNF) has announced development by the Christian Michelsen Institute, Department of Applied Physics, of a current meter of high accuracy and stability. The announcement was made in the NTNF's progress report presented at the ‘Oceanology International 75’ conference held March 17–21, 1975, at Brighton, England. The current meter measures two orthogonal current vectors in the range 0–2.5 mm/s with a bandwidth of less than 15 Hz. Several prototypes have bee
