摘要:
Perhaps the most ignored yet among the most vital resources in the community are the indigenous talents of members of the ethnic minority groups (black Americans, Spanish surname Americans, Indian Americans) and women. Today only a very limited number of persons from these groups have the professional training and experience to assume professional leadership in the geophysical sciences and related fields. This fact presents community leaders, educational institutions, and professional societies with a crucial problem‐how to develop and utilize the skills of a larger corps of minority specialists in the geophysical professions. Hence the critical question that faces the AGU Committee on Minorities is How can the American Geophysical Union use its resources, most of which are intellectual, with the greatest leverage to increase minority participation in the geophysical sciences both in the short term and over the next generatio

摘要:
The Arabs performed a great service for the American people by demonstrating that there are limits to the availability of oil. But now with the end of the embargo, the advent of spring, and more gasoline, many people are resuming their wasteful habits. Some recent opinion polls that have been published inScience[Murray et al., 1974] show that the public does not understand the seriousness of our energy problems and that it believes they will be solved in a few years. The fact is that with our present rate of motion we could find ourselves enduring uncertainties of supply, inflation, and economic dislocations for a decade or more.

摘要:
The research field of solar‐terrestrial physics (STP), with a long and varied history, has undergone in the last fifteen years a minor revolution in understanding as well as in the number of active participants. These changes in the field in the last two decades have come about to a large extent because of the advent in several nations of space programs using rocket and satellite technology and because. of the large amounts of research money that were made available for these program

摘要:
Early in the development of an ocean program by U.S. government research agencies, it was recognized that the systematic collection of meaningful data would contribute tremendously to our knowledge of the oceans. The list of proponents of this approach to ocean investigations read like a Who's Who in Oceanography. Out leading the pack was Harris B. Stewart, Jr., as godfather to this country's Seamap (Scientific Exploration and Mapping Program) efforts. But these scientific greats have gone on to more challenging arenas, and no one has come forward to assume the helm. Hence, after more than a decade of valiant effort, Project Seamap was finally laid to rest in 1973.

摘要:
The International Symposium on Snow Mechanics was held April 1–5, 1974, in Grindelwald, Switzerland, under the sponsorship of the International Association of Hydrological Science. The conference, organized by the International Commission on Snow and Ice, attracted participants from a number of countries to discuss the physical and mechanical fundamentals of snow. Four review papers provided the basis to which authors added new material for the consideration of the small, select group of snow mechanician

摘要:
One of the main aims of the European Geophysical Society is to destroy the European tradition that young scientists, like little boys should be seen but not heard. This was made quite explicit in early comparisons of the EGS with the American Geophysical Union.Over two years ago, for example, I wrote (Nature, 230, 213, 1971): ‘The really impressive thing about the AGU annual meeting is the way that both in and out of the formal program the young and comparatively inexperienced mix with the older and more experienced on an equal personal footing to the benefit of both. The research student, for example, is not only supported financially to attend the meeting in the first place but is freely given precious time to present his results and ideas before as critical an audience of his discipline colleagues as he will probably ever find

摘要:
Of the twenty or so volcanoes that erupted in 1973, Eldfell volcano on Heimaey Island in Iceland was by far the most destructive. According to scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey, it also represents man's most successful attempt at volcanic control. The volcano was officially declared dead by Icelandic scientists on July 3, 1973. A year later the inhabitants are still laboring to uncover their farmlands and rebuild their homes. That there is so much left to salvage is thanks to the ingenuity of scientists who devised a technique to abate the lava flow as well as to the courage and determination of the islanders.

摘要:
New definitions for such crucial terms as ‘reserves’ and ‘resources’ in minerals have been jointly adopted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines and the U.S. Geological Survey. The new definitions are more accurate than those they supersede in describing the estimated production potential of mineral deposits, including fuels.Because the Bureau of Mines and the USGS both collect important information about minerals, a common terminology is essential to evaluate the data for government planning. The classification system agreed upon is based on two key criteria: the extent of geological knowledge about the resource and the economic feasibility of its recovery. The new definitions are liste

摘要:
Last year the Australian National University established a Research School of Earth Sciences as an outgrowth of its Department of Geophysics, which had been noted for its programs in experimental petrology and geochemistry, paleomagnetism and geomagnetism, geochronology, rock mechanics, and seismology. These same programs form the nucleus for the new research school.
