摘要:
Responding to heavy precipitation during the first half of the month, streamflow for June was well‐above normal throughout much of the East and Midwest, and scattered regional and local flooding occurred in New England, Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior.USGS hydrologists said that 90% of the 164 key index gaging stations across the country reported normal to well‐above normal streamflow conditions during June. More than half of those stations reporting wellabove normal conditions are in the eastern half of the nat

摘要:
HEBBLE's precise aim is to develop and to test explicit predictions about the response of adhesive/cohesive marine sediments to imposed and controlled stresses [Hollister et al., 1980; Kerr, 1980]. Pursuit of this goal has necessitated a co‐ordinated, interdisciplinary effort, to date including physical oceanographers, sedimentologists, radiochemists and biochemists, and biological oceanographers.Current produced bed features reflect significant momentum exchange between the fluid boundary layer and the sediment surface. From photographs, and the few current meter records available, it appears that vast areas of the deep sea are presently being modified by energetic flows. The bed forms range in scale from kilometers to millimeters and are found where near bottom currents have been delineated by maxima in near bottom potential temperature. Moreover, on the Scotian Rise for example, many of these bedforms are being produced by present day currents because rapid destruction of the features by benthic organisms is evidenced in stereo‐photogra

摘要:
The George H. Scripps Memorial Marine Laboratory in La Jolla, Calif., has been designated a national historic landmark by the U.S. Department of the Interior. Completed in 1910, the building is the oldest structure at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography of the University of California, San Diego, and is the oldest marine laboratory building in the western hemisphere. The laboratory, designed by notable San Diego architect Irving Gill, was designated San Diego National Landmark 119 and was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, the year it was scheduled to be demolished. (The building had been thought to be not sturdy enough to withstand earthquakes; a review of the original building plans showed that no major structural changes would be required to meet modern seismic safety standards. Demolition plans were canceled.)

摘要:
In 1975 a past Macelwane recipient, Ignacio Rodriguez‐Iturbe, was leaving the M.I.T. faculty to return to Venezuela. It was my unhappy task as the (then) department head to find his replacement in the awakening field of stochastic hydrology. Ignacio assured me that the problem was solved. He had a young Ph.D. student named Rafael Bras who would make us forget all about Rodriguez‐Iturbe!Today, just 5 years after his mentor received this award, we honor Rafael Luis Bras with the 1982 James B. Macelwane Aw
