摘要:
Much of the previously unmapped area of the world has now been covered with high oblique aerial photography by the United States Army Air Forces. Future expeditious use of these data for the preparation of reconnaissance topographic maps requires several known elevations per hundred square miles. An economical method of developing such control is described herein.

摘要:
This paper deals very briefly with the topic, “Problems in photogrammetry,” not with any specific problem or solution, but rather with the generalized subject of photogrammetry problems. It is intended to show how research projects arise in the course of routine teaching of photogramme

摘要:
The study of the earthquake centering near Moselle, Missouri, opens up for research a heretofore unnoticed region of seismic activity. The macroseismic data of this earthquake, summarized in the form of an isoseismal map, agree with the interpretation of the selsmograms. A geologic survey made in the epicentral region delineates the fault along which both the instrumental and macroseismic results placed the epicenter. A study of the hypocentral depth shows that this fault system might extend to a depth where some have denied faulting. Thus the earthquake gives a hint of structure.

摘要:
From surface‐water and air temperatures 7 m above the water, it was found that over Lake Michigan in winter, a vapor pressure difference of about 5 mb between air and surface water was necessary for “steam‐fog” to form when the water was between 0° and 5°C. With a smaller vapor pressure difference there was no “steam‐fog” with a greater difference than 5 mb there was dense steam‐fog. The wind‐velocity and lapse‐rate determined the character of its appearance after “steam‐fog” had formed. Conditions favoring its formation over the lake are most frequent in January. There are fewer occurrences in Decem

摘要:
The effect of vertical motion on pressure and temperature changes is briefly discussed, and the role of vertical velocities in the process of condensation is stressed. Two independent methods for the measurement of vertical velocities are outlined, and a practical technique for computation is described. The effect of vertical velocities in bringing about changes in sky condition and weather is illustrated in two cases. The field of vertical velocity from the surface to thirteen kilometers through a Colorado Low is illustrated by means of a cross‐section showing in the vertical plane the projections of streamlines of air flow, pressure changes, type of temperature advection, and the locations of the tropopause and the trough lin

摘要:
Nine years ago I showed that ups and downs in the values of the solar constant of radiation were attended by changes of large magnitude and long duration in the temperature of Washington and other stations. These effects were always symmetrically opposed like the right and left hands. Meteorologists have been reluctant to accept this finding, partly because the solar changes found seemed to them too small to be certainly observed, and partly because no mathematical theory had been worked out to show how small percentage‐changes in the solar constant could so largely alter terrestrial temperatures.Nevertheless, further work convinced me of the reality of the effect and recently I have secured new evidence that seems to clinch i

摘要:
In his paper “On spontaneous increase of magnetic moments” [see 1 of “References” at end of paper], H. H. Howe included some curves and observations submitted by one of the present authors relating to the increase of moment of magnet 31L, the cobalt‐steel long magnet of the Cooke‐type magnetometer that has been in use at the Tucson Magnetic Observatory since late 1940. One of the curves showed the variation of the moment of the magnet (corrected to 20°C) with time, over a period of two years. Another showed the variation of the “adjusted” moment, with time, the adjustment being made by eliminating the linear drift of the moment for the two‐year period in order to illustrate the seasonal change of the moment. It was demonstrated that the residual seasonal change of the moment was not a direct function of the seasonal temperatures, but was apparently related in some way to

摘要:
Characteristics of sporadic E‐region ionization (Es) at the Watheroo Magnetic Observatory, Watheroo, Western Australia, have been determined from continuous ionospheric recordings since June, 1938. Average diurnal curves show prevalence at night with maximum occurrence near midnight local time. The seasonal features of Es already established for the Northern Hemisphere have been confirmed for the Southern Hemisphere with maximum occurrence of Es in local summer months. Annual trends show increasing values for the period 1938 to 1941 suggestive of an inverse relationship with solar activity. Tests for recurrence‐tendencies of Es with the 27‐day solar‐rotation period have not produced any positive corr
